Chapter One: Introduction
1.1 Background of the Study
In recent years, social media has become a powerful tool for political engagement, especially among young people. In Sabon Gari LGA, Kaduna State, social media platforms such as Facebook, Twitter, and WhatsApp have been increasingly used to promote political awareness, mobilize voters, and engage in political discourse (Gimba & Shehu, 2024). Online advocacy campaigns have gained popularity in bridging the communication gap between political leaders and constituents, particularly in local elections. However, the role of social media in enhancing political participation, especially in rural areas like Sabon Gari, is still under-explored. This study will examine how online advocacy on social media platforms influences voter engagement, mobilization, and political awareness among residents of Sabon Gari LGA.

This study aims to investigate how social media platforms are being utilized in political campaigns and whether they effectively increase political participation among the electorate in Sabon Gari. It will assess the challenges and opportunities presented by online political engagement in the context of local politics.
